About Natural Channel Design Engineering

Natural Channel Design Engineering is an engineering and environmental resource management company based out of Flagstaff, Arizona. Our work utilizes a combination of stream assessments and geomorphic characterizations supplemented by analytic assessments to evaluate and understand watersheds. We also consider how society, and the natural processes of channel formation can coincide. Stream channel assessment requires three distinct steps. First, characterization of existing conditions. Second, identification of the potential or reference condition for the system. And third, comparing the existing condition against the potential of the system to identify stream needs and design criteria. Once these parameters are established, an empirical assessment of critical velocities, shear stresses, and other physical processes are analyzed to complete the design to meet project objectives. Our work has successfully extended these principles to a range of projects including habitat enhancement, bank stabilization, transportation infrastructure, drainage design, cultural resource protection, fish passage, and watershed planning efforts in both urban and rural environments. And we have pioneered ways restoration practices that safely and effectively integrate watershed and channel restoration amidst growing infrastructure, varied land use, and increased recreational pressure.
