Neighborhood Housing Services of Greater Berks, Inc. [NHS] was incorporated in 1977 with the vision of increasing homeownership in the City of Reading. We believe that homeownership builds strong families; strong families build stable neighborhoods; and stable neighborhoods build healthy communities. At the foundation of this vision were concepts such as resident empowerment, redevelopment, public and private partnerships, and aggressive intervention. While NHS has continued to evolve, through the commitment of a dedicated Staff and Board of Directors, our goals remain to • increase homeownership; • reduce neighborhood blight; • provide resources for home improvement; • foster community strength through education, training, and leadership development; and • develop self-sustaining programs. Let us help you build a better future as you help us build better communities. • Our Home Buyer Education Program turns renters into educated consumers. • Our HomeOwnership Center assists with mortgages, closing costs and down payments. • Our Home Improvement Program administers grants and loans for home repairs. • Operation Renovation: A Veterans affair makes improvements to veterans’ homes at no cost to the veteran. • Our Home Owners Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program provides one-on-one counseling sessions to discuss options and strategies. • Our Neighborhood Building Office supports, educates, and suggests tools and techniques to community residents interested in becoming empowered agents of social change.
