About Neighbors in Action
Neighbors in Action is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization located 7 miles east of downtown Houston and serves the Port Houston community. Port Houston, a neighborhood of approximately 5,000 people, is a food desert lacking health facilities, pharmacies, and grocery stores. The only government facility in the area is Port Houston Elementary, built in 1909. It serves a student body that is 99% Hispanic, 84.1% of students are considered at risk and 67.9% of students are enrolled in bilingual and English language learning programs. Neighbors in Action’s mission is to partner with families in the Port Houston community and surrounding neighborhoods to transform lives through spiritual growth, education, and meeting basic needs. Neighbors in Action serves as the sole alternative for children and teenagers, providing a constructive environment to prevent them from "hanging out on the streets." To achieve this, we provide educational and faith-based programs, along with emergency assistance, free of charge to low-income Hispanic families in Port Houston, available seven days a week for children, youth, and adults year-round.
