Hundreds of thousands of children in Israel go to school hungry, without eating breakfast and many times not even eating dinner the night before. The pangs of hunger make it difficult for them to concentrate in school and many of them drop out of the education system. Countless studies conducted around the world prove that a nutritious breakfast improves students concentration, memory and learning abilities, reduces disobedience and absences, and improves academic achievements. Nevet was established to provide a natural and simple solution that has great impact on the future of the young generation. Nevet is active throughout the country, operating mainly in the social and geographic periphery. We provide A nutritious breakfast including a sandwich, along with fresh vegetables and fruits. Throughout the school year we take care for 17,000 students in about 400 different schools, cutting across sectors and ages. This amounts to a total of 2,500,000 sandwiches a year. Our actions take care of the most basic thing – the feeling of not feeling hungry, without which it is impossible to begin discussing education. Nevet started out as a program initiated by Leket Israel in 2006 to assist hungry children by supplying the schools with provisions for preparing tasty, nutritious sandwiches. Following a decade of activity as a program within Leket Israel, and in order to promote this important educational goal, it was decided to expand the program and establish Nevet as a public benefit organization. Many schools ask to join the program every year. Nevet aims to reach all needy children in Israel by establishing a national nutrition enterprise sponsored by the state.
