About New York State Workers' Compensation Board
The NYS Workers’ Compensation Board is a state agency that oversees three types of insurance for workers: workers’ compensation, disability benefits, and Paid Family Leave. • Workers’ compensation provides lost wage benefits and medical treatment to employees who become injured or ill on the job. • Disability benefits provide temporary cash benefits to employees who become injured or ill outside of their employment and are unable to work. • Paid Family Leave provides job-protected, paid time off to employees in times of family need. Our mission at the Board is to protect the rights of employees and employers by ensuring the proper delivery of benefits and by promoting compliance with the law. Our agency does this by resolving disputes in the system, authorizing medical providers, and penalizing bad actors. We are assisted in this mission by a formal Board, consisting of our Chair, Vice-Chair, and 11 other members from various industries across the state, who make decisions on administrative appeals. We believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are invaluable to our mission and to creating a culture where people come together to innovate and resolve issues affecting New Yorkers. We strive to recruit and cultivate an employee base whose demographic make-up reflects the many unique faces, voices, and backgrounds of the diverse public we serve. We see DEI as crucial elements in the pursuit of helping workers access essential benefits. We employ approximately 1,000 professionals at 23 locations across New York State, working in a wide range of job titles. These include workers’ compensation examiners, attorneys, business systems analysts, investigative officers, administrative assistants, nurse practitioners, program managers, public information specialists, licensed medical social workers, and more.
