About News Ambassadors

News Ambassadors enlists college journalism students to help local newsrooms fill gaps in coverage of underreported communities with stories that uplift evidence-based solutions and common ground – and are responsive to local community needs. To do this, we foster collaborations between journalism schools, local newsrooms and community organizations to listen and learn what’s missing from local news coverage. Then, News Ambassadors trains journalism students in reporting tools - specifically Solutions Journalism and a depolarization reporting strategy called Complicating the Narratives, so they can report stories informed by one of these approaches and by insights learned from listening to community members themselves. Professors share top stories with local newsroom partners for vetting and possible broadcast. To support the process, we encourage students to collaborate with their peers in other parts of the country as they each report local stories using these new tools.
