After being involved in multiple vivarium construction and renovation projects it has become painfully obvious that most mistakes are made because: Number One: Decision makers are forced to rely on vendors (who have a conflict of interest) because of a lack of internal experience and expertise. Number Two: Decision makers are well intention-ed but too far removed from the day to day operation and do not have the internal expertise (New vivarium building and major renovations are not an everyday occurrence). Number Three: Some of the big name companies that dominate our industry and provide consulting, although experienced in vivarium management, do not have the same vivarium needs as those who operate internal vivariums (and in my experience frankly give terrible impractical advice). I know what you're thinking, but I hired an architectural firm that has experience with vivariums! Where these successful builds? Would their customers use them again? Do they truly understand the day to day operation of your program?
