About Next Chapter Holdings
Next Chapter Holdings (NCH), located in Highland Park, Illinois, is the family office of the Pattis family. The office manages investments of Next Chapter Holdings as well as the investments and business affairs of various operating entities, family trusts, family members and The Pattis Family Foundation. Our investment objective is prudent long-term growth and capital appreciation. Our strategy is to invest in a diversified range of asset classes and differing investment styles with a special focus on alternative asset classes such as private equity (buyouts, growth financings, and venture capital), real estate, natural resources, and hedge funds. We have a deep-routed long-term perspective, due to our permanent capital and multi-generational time horizon, an equity bias, and a resilience to short and medium term volatility which we generally view as an opportunity. Our approach is to align our interests with a select group of the world’s most talented managers to whom we delegate broad discretionary authority. In addition, in partnership with other investors and entrepreneurs, NCH manages a portfolio of non-operating direct investments in private companies; many of these entities are focused in the media, publishing, information and education sectors where we bring many years of experience in strategic, operational, and legal management. The focus of our office’s activities is asset allocation, investment selection, portfolio management of our external managers, performance evaluation and measurement, compliance, and reporting. The liquidity for our investments resulted primarily from three startup businesses in media, each of which was subsequently acquired by firms listed on the New York Stock Exchange. These transactions were: The Pattis Group which was acquired by 3M in 1988; NTC Publishing Group which was acquired by Tribune Company in 1996; and North Shore Magazine which was acquired by Sun-Times Media Group in 1997.
