About NICE - Centre for Movement Disorders

NICE to meet you! NICE is a unique charity working to transform the lives of children and adults affected by movement disorders. We are based in Birmingham, UK. About Movement Disorders Movement is a part of who we are. A lack, loss or difficulty with movement affects every aspects of daily life. It can mean that people lose or are unable to gain independence in daily skills and this impacts on their learning, confidence and social skills. Movement disorders are neurological conditions that affect the speed, fluency, quality, and ease of movement. They may arise around birth e.g. cerebral palsy or could be acquired in later life e.g. Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, ataxia, stroke or brain injury. Our Approach At our specialist Centre for Movement Disorders, we teach children and adults with movement disorders strategies to gain greater control over their movements leading to increased confidence, skills and a higher level of potential. To achieve this we use a systematic programme of conscious movement strategies called Conductive Education. At NICE, we believe having a movement disorder does not have to mean having a loss in independence or quality of life. At our centre, we respect each individual for who they are. We see them as individual people with their own challenges, solutions and potential. By teaching people through Conductive Education, we can help them gain the skills they want to learn in order to lead a fulfilling life. All of our staff specialise in movement disorders and are trained to facilitate the person to find appropriate ways to overcome the challenges they identify.
