About Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society
The Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society is located in the original 18th-century birthplace & childhood home of Noah Webster, Jr., author of landmark educational publications; the "Blue-Backed Speller” (1783) and the American Dictionary of the English Language (1828). Webster was an education reformer, political activist, lawyer and an early abolitionist. In 1785, he published "Sketches of American Policy" which outlined his vision for a strong Federal government, and what would become the blueprint for the United States Constitution, ratifed four years later. His family's home, a National Historic Landmark property, was restored by the Noah Webster Foundation, a private 501(c)(3) organization, and opened to the public as a museum in 1965. The Foundation merged with West Hartford Historical Society in 1970. The site now includes The Noah Webster House, the Jodik Education Center (featuring a functioning reproduction open hearth) two exhibition galleries, and the West Hartford Gift Shop, as well as the Hamilton Gallery and West Terrace, which are available to host facility rentals. The West Hartford History Center officially opened for research requests in May of 2024, and the museum’s collection holdings include decorative arts, manuscripts, first edition books, and ephemeral artifacts related to the life of American icon Noah Webster, and the community of West Hartford.
