About North West Refining
In 2004, a group of Albertans founded North West Refining with the vision of building Canada’s first new refinery since 1984. The project became the Sturgeon Refinery, the world’s first refinery designed from the outset to capture CO₂ emissions from its operations. Developed in partnership with Canadian Natural Upgrading Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Canadian Natural Resources Limited, the Sturgeon Refinery processes Alberta bitumen into high-value refined products, creating long-term value for the province by upgrading resources locally and reducing environmental impact. The facility began operations in 2017. In 2021, North West Refining sold its 50% interest in the refinery to the Government of Alberta.
