About Northern Territory Public Guardian and Trustee
The Office of the Public Guardian was established on 28 July 2016 under the Guardianship of Adults Act 2016. The Act provides the legal framework for adult guardianship in the Northern Territory. The Northern Territory Civil and Administrative Tribunal has the power to deal with matters under the Act. Our dedicated staff provide telephone and face-to-face guardianship information and support to people in the Northern Territory. Our mission is to provide adult guardianship services, information and advocacy that is responsive to the needs of the Northern Territory community and reflects contemporary, best practice guardianship principles within a human rights framework. We Also : • Help represented adults, their families and carers to access support services promote understanding and awareness in the community of guardianship and impaired decision-making capacity • Undertake and promote education and research in relevant areas provide guardianship for adults where appointed or needed monitor and investigate complaints about the conduct of guardians advise the Minister for Health about relevant issues. • Our office also helps the Northern As a statutory organisation, the information and service we provide is impartial and independent of government. Guardianship is a legal way to appoint a person (a ‘guardian’) to act in certain personal or financial matters for an adult who has impaired decision-making capacity and needs someone to help them with decisions.
