About NY Birth Control Access Project
Every advocate we work with has a story of struggling to access birth control. Unfortunately, these aren’t isolated anecdotes—they reflect a broader, measurable problem. New York is failing to meet demand for contraception. With fewer contraceptive providers per capita than most states - ranking with Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas - and 1.2 million women living in a contraceptive desert, patients are being left without the care they need. NYBCAP operates at the intersection of advocacy and policy to actualize legislative and regulatory reforms; provide sex education courses; and mobilize a new generation of highly trained and motivated advocates. In 2021, NYBCAP developed an Associate Board for advocates from public colleges across New York. Since then, over 400 young people have graduated from the Associate Board. We provide hands-on-training models to equip young people with the skills they need to bring real advocacy into the real world. These advocates tell us they join because they want an opportunity to meaningfully engage in an issue that impacts them—and report they are more civically educated and engaged because of their time with us.
