About Nystrom Design

Principal Ellen Nystrom credits an undergraduate year in Aix-en-Provence and graduate studies in Copenhagen with igniting her passion for interior design. Inspired by the balance between historic and modern architecture that she observed abroad, Ellen worked towards a balanced education of her own. She holds a degree in Sociology from UC San Diego and a Masters of Interior Architecture from the University of Oregon. Equipped with a strong design foundation, Ellen honed her craft at several notable San Francisco design firms before founding Nystrom Design in 2009. Hallmarks of Nystrom Design include careful attention to the use of light, a connection to the natural world, and a deep regard for craftsmanship. The firm’s work demonstrates a thoughtful interpretation of modern design, and is known for a process-oriented approach resulting in spaces that strike a balance between bold moves and an understated sophistication. Ellen thrives on the creative process. Whether she is designing an office for a busy startup or a relaxed family home, clients appreciate her collaborative approach to interior design. Nystrom Design offers a full range of interior design services for residential and commercial spaces, and is now accepting projects throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Ellen currently resides in San Francisco with her family.
