About Ó Bhéal
Ó Bhéal is Cork’s monthly hybrid poetry event, featuring poetry-films, a poetry challenge, guest poets and an open-mic. Ó Bhéal also presents the annual Winter Warmer poetry festival each November, and curates two International competitions: The Five Words poetry competition and the Ó Bhéal International Poetry-Film competition, in association with the IndieCork festival of Independent Film and Music. Ó Bhéal has hosted fifty Monday-night events per year since April 2007. Each evening begins with a screening of poetry-films followed by a poetry challenge (known as The Five Word Challenge, or McNamara Slam), which in turn precedes one or more featured guest poets from Ireland or abroad and an open-mic session which ends the night. The 16th of April 2018 marked Ó Bhéal’s 11th Anniversary and 554th event. Each November Ó Bhéal presents the Winter Warmer Poetry Festival, a weekend of poetry featuring over twenty-three poets, some of whom perform to music. The festival also showcases events which fuse poetry with other art forms, including theatre and film. Ó Bhéal promotes contemporary poetry and the advancement of poets & poetry audiences. We also foster young people’s voices, nurture a lively appreciation of poetry-films and host a winter festival to feature the full spectrum of poetry genres, including translations & collaboration across art forms.
