About Occams

Occams provides high-quality strategic services to clients in the pharmaceutical industry. Using mathematical modelling and simulation, relationships between administered drug amounts, resulting drug concentrations and their pharmacodynamic effects can be described and investigated in patient populations. We derive our name from the heuristic principle known as Occam’s razor, attributed to the Franciscan friar William of Ockham (1287-1347): when multiple explanations are equally capable of describing the outcome, the least complex solution is preferred. This strategy produces stable and robust models that are easier to communicate and to apply to the questions that matter. Make no mistake: we deliver complex state-of-the-art modelling, but our years of experience in academia, at CROs, and in providing consultancy services to the pharmaceutical industry have honed our ability to ask and answer the key questions in drug development clearly and efficiently without being distracted by side issues. Carl Peck, in his 2008 commemorative presentation at ACoP, quoted Lewis Sheiner as saying "Do not shy from complexity, but strive to simplify”. This idea lies at the heart of the Occams vision, and when applied to cutting-edge pharmacometric modelling and simulation, results in rapid, robust and efficient answers to the key questions in modern drug development.
