Ocean data as a solution The insurance and reinsurance industries combined earned an estimate of USD 2,5 trillion in the P&C business in 2024 with around 70 % of all insured losses linked to natural catastrophes such as severe convective storms, tropical cyclones and flooding. The world’s impact and dependency on land and sea has short- and long-term implications on the risk business who is, at its turn, standing behind all other industries including offshore renewable energy, shipping, fisheries, tourism, real estate and many more. Risk intelligence through data and AI is at the core of the strategy for improving financial results, both for growth - by developing new risk products & services, as well as for profitability - by sharpening underwriting practices, modelling and claims management. Nevertheless, ocean variables are almost absent across the re/insurance value chain due to the lack of historical data yet reinsurers and global insurers, need to factor them in for a more comprehensive view of risk.
