The purpose of this page is to introduce to interested parties a unique Aquaculture project which has the capacity to becoming a highly profitable growth business. Oceanpure Pty Ltd was formed to develop a sea urchin aquaculture industry in Australia with a goal to deliver high quality sea urchin products for export, and to the hotels, restaurants and kitchens of Australia. Stocks of quality wild sea urchins have been in decline for the last twenty years but demand, particularly in North and South East Asia, is strong and growing. In Australia, with the increased focus on fine dining there is a small but growing demand for high quality sea urchin roe. The current supply/demand mismatch has created an opportunity for the aquaculture of sea urchins in Australia. The Tripneustes gratilla (T. gratilla), which under culture conditions can reach a size ready for harvest in 6 - 8 months from weaning, as opposed to a minimum of 36 months for the temperate species. The target species is also native to Japan and is known for its excellent taste, colour and texture. The growth rates and the stunning quality of this urchin make it the ideal candidate for aquaculture.
