On a mission to help the helpers... Odin’s Heart Foundation serves the families and caregivers of patients suffering from rare medical conditions by providing them with financial and community support. We know that among us, there are helpers who will rise and be there for us, no matter what it takes. These helpers give the rest of us something to hope for and believe in. Without them, the situation and outcome will be drastically different. What is the human experience without the support and aid of our fellow man? As we recognize the value of their role in society, we must also recognize the hardship of being caretakers for those in great need. The stress is particularly crushing when your loved one suffers from a rare condition. The general public may not know or understand such conditions and the toll they take on the families and caregivers of those who live with them. The desire to care for others can sometimes erode their care for themselves, and they often feel isolated or without support. Odin’s Heart exists to find, recognize, and support the caretakers of those who suffer from rare conditions leaving them ill, fragile, and perhaps not long for this world. These caretakers are special, and their needs are even more demanding as they balance the normal travails of life with the struggles of those they assist. These caretakers are often family – parents, grandparents, siblings, sons, and daughters. As the world shifts and our picture of the nuclear family gives way to a mosaic of different family types—we see these close caretakers comprising step relations, neighbors, friends, and even coworkers. Even professionals trained and paid for caretaking should be considered affected by patient care. Ensuring these giving kind helpers are supported eases the burden of trudging a lifetime of rare disease care.
