The U.S. Department of Education (ED) Office of Inspector General (OIG) is a statutory, independent oversight entity within ED. The OIG is charged with conducting independent audits, investigations, and other reviews to promote the efficiency, effectiveness, and integrity of ED programs and operations and identify and prevent fraud, waste, abuse, and criminal activity involving ED funds, programs, and operations. Through its work, the OIG recommends actions to address systemic weaknesses and improve ED programs and operations and may recommend changes be made in some of the most important Federal education laws, regulations, and policies in our country.
