About Office of the Inspector-General of Emergency Management

The Office of the Inspector-General of Emergency Management (IGEM) supports a strong and confident disaster management sector in Queensland to deliver safer and more resilient communities. The Office plays an important role in bringing the sector together to draw on collective experience, wisdom, and expertise to anticipate, plan, prepare, and respond to all hazards across the State. The Office provides independent, timely, and valued assurance and insights to enhance Queensland’s disaster management arrangements. It achieves these functions by: - undertaking activities to drive continuous improvement through collaborative assessment, partnership, engagement, and research. - working with state government agencies, local governments, non-government organisations and researchers to identify and solve gaps in disaster management knowledge, policy and practice. - drawing together the disaster management sector, and in consultation with industry, to focus collective efforts to advance capability. The role of the IGEM was established in December 2013, following a review of police and community safety, with the Office founded in 2014. The functions of the IGEM and of the Office of the IGEM are prescribed in the Disaster Management Act 2003.
