About Oh, Kippah!

This story began in January of 2020, when I, Erna, was spending the whole time with my mom, and the third of this time we were at the oncology department of Ichilov hospital. I decided to entertain myself with something that will distract me from the hospital routine. So, I started to knit. Of course, my first masterpiece was a scarf which keeps lying in the closet by now. It’s so huge that I can’t wear it. I might give it to someone who’ll like it. Knitting a scarf with needles seemed so easy that I decided to try crocheting. The easiest thing to crochet was a kippah for me. A wise reader would laugh, but I was confident enough. I was very surprised when I could make neither the first nor the second, nor the third, nor the tenth one. I tried all the schemes from the internet, but none worked the way they were supposed to. I kept asking kippot sellers and women knitting for their husbands what I was doing wrong. Everyone’s answer was the same: experience. Knit a hundred kippot and you’ll understand where to increase or decrease crochets. My natural laziness and love for algorithms started a riot. Then, I decided to make schemes of my own – they would help everyone knit a traditional kippah. It took me half a year. I wanted to make different patterns, I had to develop schemes for different sizes and types of yarn. It worked! While developing the schemes I found out that I prefer non-classical kippah colors. A kippah is a Jewish accessory. It’s both a symbol of a connection with God and a part of everyday outfit. It surprised me why such an important element of Jews’ clothing is made of cheap yarn (it is close to hair, face and eyes) and is always of the same color and pattern. I made up my mind to knit kippot that will bring joy to those who like to look fashionable and up-to-date, especially my relatives and friends. Then there was a decision to create our own kippot production line with the best natural yarn, various patterns, colors and design.
