Ombrello Solutions builds systemic investment instruments that attract institutional and private capital, at scale, towards Healthier Cities and their key priority areas. The team at Ombrello Solutions researches, designs and structures financial products that address the three core gaps in capital formation: 1) Lack of scalable private capital, invested in the portfolio of required solutions for each priority area, and generating sustainable returns. 2) Lack of community ownership and governance that assures collective participation and decision making. 3) Lack of repayment mechanisms that pool in private value. Since its inception in October 2022, Ombrello Solutions is structuring two systemic investment mechanisms: 1) $250mil Civic Infrastructure Bond that addresses rapid depletion of nature and biodiversity in Canadian cities. This product targets $200mil in institutional capital and $50mil in catalytic first loss capital, to be deployed towards acquisition and integration of nature based solutions for climate resilience across ~200 acres in Quebec and Ontario. All acquired sites are to be owned and governed by local Community Endowment Funds/ Fiducie d’Utilité Social. The servicing and repayment of the investment capital comes from value appreciation in adjacent real estate, resulting from the sites ecosystem services. 2) $100mil Homelessness Bond that addresses the need for permanent housing for individuals and families who are finding themselves on the street due to evictions brought by the affordability crisis. This product targets $100mil in impact investing capital, to be deployed to purchase and maintain homes for ~400 individuals and families. All acquired permanent homes are to be owned by local Community REITs. The servicing of the investment capital comes from savings in operating cash flow of the corporate property owners and small business associations. The repayment of the investment capital comes from Community REITs refinancing.
