On-Ramps to Careers is a business-education partnership that empowers young people to access and prepare for dynamic and well paid STEM careers. It provides employers and industry professionals with a reliable infrastructure to inspire students and prepare the region’s future and current workforce. Developing young workers for Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) is important for the well being of our National Capital region and economy. How can STEM and IT internships benefit your organization? Develop a talented future employee(s) with roots in the region with fresh skills in computer programming, networking, digital-media or engineering. Gain visibility for your investments in STEM education and your community. Improve morale, mentoring and leadership skills among your employees. Who are potential interns? Top Washington, DC high school students concentrating in IT or engineering. Students who have a strong academic record and completed a competitive selection process, including a resume, recommendations and interview. What will be asked of our company? Host an intern 20 to 25 hours per week in the summer, late June to early August Identify at least one employee with coaching skills to mentor the intern(s). Attend an employer training in-person or webinar. Write a job description and develop a project that incorporates learning objectives. What support will On-Ramps to Careers provide? Recruit candidates who match your requirements and priorities. Train interns for success in the workplace and host mentor-intern team-building. Serve as point of contact with the City’s youth wage subsidy program. Provide support and troubleshooting for your mentors, students and parents.
