About On the Spot Language

Our mission, since 2009 has been to guide adults learning English as a Second Language and to change their perspective and approach to the way in which language is learned. Via this process, we provide individuals with increased confidence and improved communication skills which will enable them to connect with and participate more fully in society, which ultimately transforms into increased opportunities in all aspects of their lives. Our vision is to challenge the institutionalisation of adult language education and transform our learners to become independent learners who can clearly and effectively communicate in English with confidence. We believe that language is not a form of knowledge that can simply be taught and/or memorized. We believe that language is a key to cultural worldviews, and as such, needs to be experienced in its respective socio-political context. A language, as an artifact of cultural history, as well as a dynamic product of currently-evolving society, has transformative power for a non-native who speaks it. Language carries implicit nuances and knowledge with it: to speak a foreign language is to participate in, and have a greater understanding of a culture. The OSL Program recognizes these elements of language and is therefore designed to be an experiential approach to learning. Our language students are trained on practical sentences and how to approach people and develop conversations. Most importantly they are encouraged to actively participate in a culture/city that they are new to and must be immersed in. OSL impacts the communities in which we work and we consider our activities to have transformative potential for society as well as for our students. Due to the interactive nature of our teaching model, the lives of everyone in the community are touched and altered. Much like the effect of a stone thrown into a pond - the ripple effect is immeasurable.
