About One Hundred Black Men
For over 60 years, One Hundred Black Men has worked with government, corporations, and community leaders to transform economic and social policy, as well as launch independent programs and organizations that serve low-income communities. Our members include leaders across the business, political, and non-profit sectors in New York. The organization provides scholarships, educational support, economic empowerment, mentoring, health and wellness initiatives and an overall voice for the African American community. One Hundred Black Men began in NYC in 1963 as a non-profit organization of like-minded leaders who met to advocate for improvement in conditions in their communities. These men envisioned an organization that would capitalize on the collective power of community to address issues of inequities and to empower Black Americans to become agents of change. These visionaries were business and industry leaders such as David Dinkins, Robert Mangum, Cyril Tyson, J. Bruce Llewellyn, Livingston Wingate, Andrew Hatcher, and Jackie Robinson. They forever changed the face of social, economic and political empowerment. One Hundred Black Men is proud to continue support for many initiatives including: 1) The school Eagle Academy for Young Men in the Bronx was founded by members of One Hundred Black Men, Inc. as a response to the dire crisis facing young boys. When the doors opened in 2004, it was the first all male public school to open in New York City in 30 years. In 2008, a second Eagle Academy opened in Brooklyn. Currently, six Eagle Academy schools are in operation serving over 3,000 students via the independent organization, Eagle Academy Foundation. 2) In 1986, members of the One Hundred Black Men helped found a national organization based on our model, 100 Black Men of America, Inc. which is based in Atlanta, Georgia, The organization has grown to a confederation of over 116 chapters located in the United States and abroad.
