About One Planet Port

One Planet Port (OPP) is a science-powered and citizen-empowering initiative advancing the just transition of global ports to operate within environmental limits, starting with a focus on the Netherlands. We are focused on the Port of Rotterdam: Europe’s largest port, a major fossil fuel and trade hub, and a high-leverage point in the global maritime system. Publicly owned (60% by the Municipality of Rotterdam, 40% by the Dutch state), this port represents both the risks of business-as-usual and the promise of democratic transformation. OPP brings together communities, scientists, policymakers, and port stakeholders to co-create sustainable (regenerative) futures through citizen science, public engagement, and systems change. We operate at the intersection of climate justice, pollution monitoring, ecological economics, and post-growth transition planning. From nitrogen pollution and grid congestion to sea level rise and biodiversity loss, the Netherlands faces a convergence of ecological and social tipping points. The Dutch model, highly globalized, fossil-fueled, and export-driven is under pressure. This makes the country a canary in the coal mine for the 21st century and an ideal place to prove a One Planet economy. Our work includes: • Citizen-led air pollution monitoring around the port and its industrial zones • Science-based policy advocacy aligned with planetary boundaries and sufficiency economics • Public campaigns and education to elevate the voices of residents and researchers • Stakeholder convening to chart actionable, just transition pathways Join us as we help ports like Rotterdam lead the shift from extractive infrastructure to regenerative, people-first systems.
