One Word at a Time, Inc., founded by Kwame Alexander, advances the literacy skills of children in middle grades (ages 8-15) by inspiring joyful reading and writing. Children tend to read less for pleasure once they reach late elementary and middle school, which negatively affects their academic success and wellbeing. OWAAT strives to reverse this trend by creating and sustaining a community of enthusiastic readers and writers through dynamic literacy experiences for students, transformative professional development for educators, and strategic guidance for children's book authors. We strive toward a world in which… *All young people read and write skillfully, with curiosity and independence. *All educators are equipped with the knowledge and tools to support young peoples’ reading and writing with authenticity and enthusiasm. *All emerging and established children’s book authors possess the skills to engage, entertain, and inspire young learners in educational settings.
