About Ontario Libertarian Party
The Ontario Libertarian Party was officially registered with Elections Ontario in 1975. The Party is guided by adherence to the philosophical ideas of Austrian Economics and influenced by authors and thinkers like Jan Narveson and Murray Rothbard. The basic principle of the Party is that the coercive force of government should only be used to protect life, liberty and property. Government should be limited to providing the national defense, police and the courts. All other functions should be left up to individuals working alone or in organizations. The primary objective of the party is to educate voters about the benefits of a free market and limited government. Elections provide the best opportunity to do this. The party is relatively small and has no paid staff. It is run by the Executive Committee consisting of the Leader, Deputy Leader, Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Recording Secretary, Treasurer, Campaign Director and two Members-at-Large. The two Members-at-Large are elected for a one year term at each annual meeting. The rest are elected for three year terms at conventions. In the 2014 General Election the Party ran 73 candidates and garnered 37,691 votes. The Party ran 51 candidates in the 2011 General Election and received just under 20,000 votes. .
