About OnWater® Foundation

OnWater® is a mission-driven social enterprise that transforms underused urban waterways into vibrant platforms for youth development, civic engagement, and ecosystem stewardship. We guide young people through a transformative journey; from gaining confidence on the water, to becoming local creative change-makers rooted in community and care. Why? Young people, especially in high-density, multicultural, and under-resourced urban environments face intersecting challenges: + Disconnection from nature and public outdoor space, especially clean and accessible blue space, which are often polluted, unsafe, or associated with exclusivity. + Poor mental and physical health, with rising rates of anxiety, ADHD, and chronic loneliness exacerbated by digital isolation and fragmented community life. + Low self-esteem and belonging, with limited pathways to leadership, employment or authentic self- expression. What’s missing isn’t just access to activity, it’s access to identity, purpose, and contribution in the places we live. Youth aren’t just lacking “engagement.” They lack safe, joyful, meaningful roles in their environment and community. And our current systems; education, leisure, civic infrastructure, often fail to meet them where they are, let alone support youth longterm. Our approach, rooted in paddlesport, fitness, storytelling, and leadership, helps young people cultivate resilience, self-worth, and a strong sense of community. Underpinning the journey are our 8 human development pillars: Dependability, Discipline, Determination, Durability, Direction, Discernment, Drive, Duty. By regenerating access to neglected waterways and reframing them as public commons, we create tangible opportunities for youth to lead, collaborate, and care for their environments.
