About Onyx Express

The ONYX EXPRESS is a multimedia newsmagazine now approaching its 20th year. Since 1994, the publication has informed Black students of issues impacting the Black community at UC Berkeley and throughout the Afrikan Diaspora, as well as provided a venue for creative expressions. Through our news website–OnyxExpress.org, and our semesterly newsmagazine, Onyx Express Magazine, ONYX is the voice of the Black community. ONYX editorial staff learn journalism skills, like photography and news writing, while business and operations staff learn administrative, marketing, and business skills; all while increasing awareness of issues facing Afrikan people on campus, in the community, and throughout the globe. Started as a newsletter in 1994, ONYX evolved into a newspaper in 2000 and a journal-magazine format in 2004, finally adopting a glossy cover in 2009. The publication survives today by adapting and evolving. Today, ONYX Express is a multimedia "digital first" publication that educates and entertains its audiences daily through its website, blogs, social media sites, online videos, and mobile application, as well as our legacy news magazine each semester. ONYXEXPRESS.org is the premiere online magazine for Black news, perspectives, and culture. This community-powered site includes news, trends, advice, and opinion on important issues impacting Black people. We curate a variety of Black thought and opinion, both encouraging Black unity while enabling a diversity of perspectives. ONYX is not the first Black student publication at UC Berkeley, but the culmination of those that have come and gone before it, including: The Black Family, Black Thoughts, Afrikan Perspectives, Word, The Source, the Afrikan Student Literary Magazine, and In the Black.
