About Open Canoe Association

The Open Canoe Association was founded in 1956 and exists to promote the open canoe as an all round, versatile craft, which can be used on placid, moving, white and open water. The heart of the OCA is the people who paddle, cherish, protect, and enjoy the diverse waterways of the UK and beyond. It is an Association of individual members and affiliated Clubs from across the UK. The OCA organises canoeing events throughout the year including; river trips, whitewater paddling, an annual rally and training courses for improving personal skills, leadership, safety and training. As well as ‘on the water’ activities the social side of paddling is equally important. Within our membership is a wide and diverse abundance of experience. Over the years members of the OCA have taken part in a number of expeditions on some of Canada’s most challenging rivers. New members are always welcome, regardless of age, experience or ability. Families, women, young people and paddlers with a disability are especially welcome as are lone paddlers looking for a network of like minded people who share a similar passion for open canoeing. Our regular quarterly newsletter, the Open Canoeist, carries details of forthcoming events, articles on equipment, techniques, trips and members own paddling experiences. Our Facebook page provides a quick and easy platform for keeping member’s up to date with news, events and sharing of photos from events.
