The Main Street movement has transformed the way communities think about the revitalization and management of their commercial districts. The Main Street Four-Point Approach® is a community-driven, comprehensive strategy used to revitalize downtown and neighborhood business districts throughout the United States. It is a common-sense way to address the variety of issues and problems that challenge traditional business districts. As the national leader, the National Trust Main Street Center® leads a coast-to-coast network of more than 1,200 state, regional, and local programs, powerfully linked through a preservation-based strategy for rebuilding the places and enterprises that create sustainable, vibrant, and unique communities. The Main Street program uses a common-sense approach to tackle the complex issues of revitalization, capitalizing on downtown’s history and identifying the resources of the community itself. The Kansas Main Street program is in the Rural Development Division-Community Development of the Kansas Department of Commerce. The state program which started in 1985, provides management training, consultation visits, local program evaluation, design assistance, business enhancement strategies, incentive dollars and continuous training in the four-point approach for board, committee members and program directors. Kansas Main Street is a self-help program. Main Street is a nationally recognized program designed to restore downtown areas as viable market places and the center of community activity. Ottawa Main Street was established July of 2001, and is a non-profit, volunteer based organization. Our thriving downtown is a great source of pride for the people of Ottawa, and a powerful asset when recruiting new businesses, jobs, and residents to our beautiful city. We all have a stake in the future of Ottawa. A thriving downtown is more than a retail service center. Downtown offers a sense of place and community.
