Our plastic ocean pollution is accumulating exponentially. Undeniable Threat. The size, growth rate and content of The Great Pacific Garbage Patch makes it one of the gravest ecological concerns facing our planet. Incomprehensible Mass of Garbage. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is larger than the country of France, larger than the states of Texas and California combined, and half the size of the continent of Australia. Even if we could collect all of this floating trash from the ocean and bring it back to land, where could we put it? The size of the The Great Pacific Garbage Patch alone makes it nearly unconquerable, and threatens the stability of the entire ecosystem of the Pacific Ocean. Doubling in Size Every Few Years. The mass of the garbage accumulation is but one-third of the problem. This garbage patch is not only massive, but growing. Over the past 40 years, it has doubled in size nearly 100 times, and it continues to double in size every few years, with no end in sight. Each year it is estimated to grow by over 15 trillion pounds of plastic trash. If we don't stop this unbridled growth rate, within a few short decades, floating plastic trash could clog the entire Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii, and poison our food supply harvested from the sea. Plastic is Poison. As if the size and growth rate of the The Great Pacific Garbage Patch were not threatening enough to our planet, 80% of the entire mass is plastic which semi-degrades in salt water and sunlight and poisons the aquatic ecosystem. Sea creatures eat those tiny poisonous plastic particles. We then eat those sea creatures and poison ourselves with our own trash. We plan on helping by clean up the oceans.
