About Own Your Life Writing

Own Your Life Writing began in January 2024 as a one-off writing seminar that has evolved into a greater project about the transformative power of storytelling. We host and facilitate life writing workshops for individuals, communities, and through a series of 12 week virtual courses, as well as publish collections of stories. Our purpose is to create a safe and supportive space where people can write openly and honestly about their emotions, memories, and identity. Life writing — autobiography, memoir, journals and diaries, letters, personal essays (and more) — can be beneficial for anyone and everyone. Writing about our experiences is a natural act of self-care: a precursor to crucial awareness, powerful expression, and cathartic release. The workshops focus as much on contemporary technique and practice as they do connection and well-being. Often it is less about the writing — certainly less about the formal properties of language — and more about the life. But it is through the language that we are able to see and understand each other and ourselves. Life writing is generative; we are able to reveal truths to ourselves through the process. We create a space for you to explore your creativity and authenticity not just as a writer, but as a person. You can experiment, play, and take risks here.
