Pain Treatment Specialists is directed and run full-time by Dr. Youmna DiStefano, an anesthesiologist physician who is fellowship-trained in Interventional Pain Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. We offer interventional and comprehensive pain management for various forms of chronic pain. We specialize in the treatment of spine pain, joint pain, failed spine surgery, cancer pain, abdominal and pelvic pain, and difficult-to-treat pain conditions such as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, facial pain, headaches, and various neuralgias. Among the interventions we specialize in are epidural injections, facet injections and radiofrequency ablation, joint injections, peripheral nerve blocks and pulsed radiofrequency, vertebroplasty, percutaneous disc decompression, discography, spinal cord stimulation, abdominal and pelvic pain interventions, sympathetic blocks, Botox injections for headaches and nerve entrapment, facial pain treatment, and medical pain management. Our philosophy emphasizes the minimization of narcotic medications and the avoidance of unnecessary surgery/reoperation, with the goal of restoring patient functioning and quality of life sustainably. We offer a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy adapted to chronic pain patients, known as Motivational Interviewing, in all of our patient encounters. This modality has been shown to reinforce patients’ learning processes and self-management techniques towards coping with chronic pain on a daily basis. Providers who implement Motivational Interviewing in their practice have found great success in getting patients off of narcotic medications, increasing their level of functioning, and increasing their rates of satisfaction with the care provided. The practice networks with providers who specialize in physical medicine, acupuncture, and cognitive-behavioral therapy to offer patients a comprehensive, multimodal approach to managing their pain. We are fluent in Spanish, French, and Arabic.
