About Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council
Palm Island is the largest discrete Indigenous community in Australia, with around 4,000 residents. Due to high mobility between Palm Island and the mainland, the population can increase to over 5,000 during festivals and events. The island has seven suburbs, from Butler Bay in the south to Wallaby Point in the north. The central area, known as The Mission, is the hub of activity, housing the mall, shops, service centers, police station, motel, hospital, health services, and Council chambers. Critical infrastructure is located at The Farm area, Solomon, and Wallaby Point. This includes the works depots, waste and recycling facility, Ergon power station, water and sewer treatment plants, and two water supply reservoirs. These services support the community’s daily needs and ensure the island's essential functions are maintained. The geographical layout of Palm Island allows for efficient delivery of services to both residents and visitors. This infrastructure ensures the community is well supported, enabling its growth, development, and the sustainability of essential services for the future.
