About Pamlico Rose Institute for Sustainable Communities
Pamlico Rose Institute for Sustainable Communities (PRISC) is a Washington, NC nonprofit 501(c)(3) that rehabilitates failing or vacant historic houses for use in residential programs for female Veterans and disabled Veterans and their families, many who suffer from physical or emotional trauma, or both. Restoring these historic houses provides homes and a place to rehabilitate their bodies, minds, and souls while also promoting community sustainability. Our initial pilot project, Rose Haven, involves restoring a 135-year old house to use as a home for female Veterans recovering from substance abuse. A second project will involve developing a connected “enclave” of historic homes for disabled Veterans and their families in the Washington, NC historic district. This Historical Enclave will be connected by a common green space that provides a social support network to the residents. To further support the Veterans in their recovery, our volunteer team of social, behavioral, and public health experts are working to build a program of social resilience to help facilitate community reintegration. Social resilience promotes interactional skills that are critical to help Veterans work through barriers because of their trauma. Social resilience for Rose Haven is exemplified by the development of a Healing Landscape that residents will “seed and harvest” to provide for the residents as well as local food pantry. PRISC’s mission also includes advocacy, outreach/awareness, and forging community partnerships. Re-utilizing and repurposing old houses ipromotes local economy, improves residential areas, promotes greater neighborhood security, and preserves local history. Research shows that trauma and stress in Veterans can be lessened through the sustainment and support of and by other Veteran groups within the local community, while building relationships with supportive neighbors can promote strong and enduring ties with groups across the local community.
