About PARTI' architecture

PARTI' is a french word which means a decision, or course of action. At the first formal School of Architecture, the Ecole de Beaux Arts in Paris, the PARTI' was the underlying scheme of a design. To advance in the school, students had to pass design tests. At the beginning of a test each student was assigned a small curtained cubical in a large hall and was given a design problem. The students could not leave their cubical until they had derived a schematic solution to the problem in the form of a simple graphic drawing called the PARTI'. The PARTI' was then kept by the faculty while the student completed an elaborate presentation of the design. The student had a month or more to complete the presentation, which was then judged by the faculty. The underlying heart of the final design had to match the scheme of the original PARTI', or it was not graded. The elegance and appropriateness of the PARTI' provided the sound foundation for prize-winning designs at the Ecole.
