About Passive Safety UK

Over 20 years ago a group of like-minded traffic specialists, road safety practitioners, highway engineers and streetscape manufacturers came together to try and reduce the number and severity of casualties resulting from collisions with roadside hazards in the UK. This initiative became known as the ‘Passive Revolution’, and its members worked tirelessly to promote the design of safer roadsides and the provision of more forgiving street furniture (now commonly referred to as ‘passive safety’). The movement was instrumental in creating the first Designing Safer Roadsides handbook for highway engineers, to accompany the Use of Passively Safe Signposts advise note (DMRB TA89) and the performance standard for Passive safety of support structures for road equipment (EN 12767). Building on the success of this collaboration and a desire to advance the cause, Passive Safety UK (PSUK) was formed. It has continued to advise, exhibit and present on the best uses of these products, including how they should be installed as part of a ‘safe system approach’. PSUK remains a key advocate for the use of passively safe, crash friendly systems, and through its activities has become the main source of up-to-date product information.
