Patagonia Area Resource Alliance (PARA) is a grassroots nonprofit in Patagonia, Arizona—a region that’s a biological hotspot identified by scientists as one of the top regions globally in need of protection for species survival. Under the threat of large-scale mining and the impacts mining has on species’ habitats, water, and breeding grounds, the biodiversity of the Patagonia region suffers. Wildlife should not be a casualty of corporate greed. As such, our mission is to stand at the front line of environmental issues in the Patagonia region to ensure all actions taken by mining companies and local government agencies have sustainable, long-term benefits for our public lands, our water, and our wildlife. Patagonia Area Resource Alliance was founded in 2011 in response to increased regional mining activity. The community did not want to let the mines go unchecked, so six locals created the watchdog organization to 1) monitor the Patagonia region for any signs of acid drainage, water pollution, habitat degradation, and species decline caused by mining companies 2) provide the public with trustworthy resources on the dangers mining poses to the region’s wildlife, water, and ecotourism, and 3) hold foreign mining companies accountable to all applicable laws and regulations.
