Patton Veterans Project (PVP) transforms the lives of veterans and military families through the power of collaborative filmmaking. Our innovative "I WAS THERE" Film Workshops provide a unique therapeutic approach to processing service-related experiences and post-traumatic stress, built on three core principles: Listening, Collaboration, and Empowerment. Through a supportive environment led by professional filmmakers and hosted by community organizations nationwide, veterans create powerful short films that tell their stories. Our approach ensures every veteran's voice is heard and valued, fostering trust and understanding through active listening between participants and instructors. The collaborative nature of filmmaking keeps participants engaged in the present moment while working toward shared creative goals. This teamwork creates a supportive environment where veterans can choose how to tell their stories and engage with their experiences in ways that feel right for them. Through public screenings, these films foster deeper understanding of veterans' experiences and promote crucial dialogue about military mental health. The creative process and finished films prove both validating and empowering, helping veterans develop a more positive outlook and continued growth. Since our founding, independent evaluations have consistently shown that our approach not only alleviates PTS symptoms but also rebuilds social bonds and restores purpose. By combining creative storytelling, professional mentorship, and peer support, we help veterans reclaim their narratives and envision new possibilities for their futures.
