About Peterson-Dumesnil House Foundation Inc
PETERSON-DUMESNIL HOUSE FOUNDATION INC is a nonprofit association that manages the 150-yeear old home located at 301 S PETERSON AVE in Louisville, Kentucky in the Crescent Hill area. It is a premier event venue for weddings, receptions, company events, birthday & anniversary celebrations and memorials. It is also a community meeting location for many organizations. What started as the original summer home of a tobacco merchant from Philadelphia now plays a vital role as a gathering place within the Crescent Hill community. In 1869, Joseph Peterson (1812-1889) built what we now know as the Peterson-Dumesnil House, on a 31-acre tract of land, with the front gate to the property being on Frankfort Avenue. Peterson, a tobacco wholesale merchant who came to Louisville from Philadelphia in 1836, had his summer home designed in the ornate Victorian-Italiante Villa style, complete with a circular stairwell leading to a cupola. The cupola has become recognized symbol of the Crescent Hill community today. 1889 – Peterson Died and left property to Granddaughters Eliza and Carrie Lindenberger. Eliza married Harry Dumesnil, whose ancestors were from France. Carrie married Edward Rowland (namesake of Rowland Ave), and both families lived in the Peterson-Dumesnil House together. The two families lived together in the house. 1948 – Eliza’s death – house purchase by Louisville Board of Education. 1975 - House listed on National Register of Historic Places 1976 – House listed as local landmark by Louisville Metro Landmarks Commission 1977 – Crescent Hill began using house for monthly neighborhood meetings 1882 – House declared surplus by Board of Education 1984 – Peterson-Dumesnil House Foundation nonprofit formed to save house and bought for $155,000 Today, the house is maintained by the PDHF and serves as the meeting location for numerous community groups and associations. It is also a premier event location for weddings, etc.
