CPA practice owners face many challenges – deadlines; lack of systems causing inefficiencies; uneven distribution of work, with owners being top heavy; client demands; billable hour requirements, difficulties finding good staff; not knowing how to market to their ideal clients etc. Practice owners also have varying levels of management skill – especially personnel management skill but, for most, it is not something their formal education has equipped them for As a result, they are often working long hours but their practice isn’t growing commensurately and even if it is, it is at the expense of their work/life balance. They get stuck in the mindset that they need to be involved in every job before it goes out the door, and that delegation is useless given that they would be faster doing it themselves. They struggle to find the right staff, or to motivate the staff they do have. Many have gotten caught in the endless tax deadlines and effort to get clients to cooperate with the information they need. They lack the systems to automate much of the work and worry about jobs that might be falling through the cracks. The first thing we do is a practice analysis to determine the greatest area of potential for that practice. There are lots of areas in any business that can be improved, but by focusing in on the area that will result in the most gain, this allows the owner to experience immediate revenue growth as well as free up time. Having practiced law for seven years, it became clear that if I could work with business owners sooner in the process, as a consultant, rather than after the fact, as a lawyer, I could help them avoid the costs and stress of legal action. I chose to focus my consulting services on the tax & accounting profession as I saw that many of their challenges were similar to what I’d observed in the legal profession.
