About Piikani Lodge Health Institute (PLHI)
For more than 12,000 years, four member Tribal Nations, the Northern Piikani or Aapatohsi Piikani, the Siksika (Siksikawa), the Kainai (All Chiefs or Blood), the Amskapi Pikuni or Southern Pikuni and their animal relatives governed the glacial mountainous lands that are now known as The Crown of the Continent ecosystem of Northern Montana. This region is regarded as one of the remaining intact landscapes of the U.S. with: mountain glacier fed watersheds that millions downstream ultimately depend on for municipal and irrigation water, unprecedented plant and animal biodiversity, and immense capacity to buffer inhabitants against the ravages of climate change. The Blackfeet people have stewarded resources in this 10+ million-acre ecosystem in sustainable ways and are the original ‘scientists’ who observed, year after year, decade after decade, century after century, changes on the land; the Blackfeet have demonstrated utmost familiarity with landforms, directionality, weather patterns, natural cycles, and any variability occurring within those systems. Now that climate change has begun to touch ground, the Blackfeet people are reasserting their rightful role as stewards of these vital lands and as a result are reclaiming health and prosperity while healing the land. As an organization founded and led by Native people, Piikani Lodge works holistically and across both human and ecological domains to promote Indigenous health and well-being. PLHI programming is designed to restore distressed Native lands and communities through regenerative practices and principles.
