About Play for Music Education

Play for Music Education is a Washington, D.C., youth-led initiative bridging the music education opportunity gap for our communities. Founded and led by teen musicians from DC public schools, we're transforming how families across the District engage with music education. Our work centers on three pillars: EDUCATE: Providing evidence-based information about music's proven academic impacts. INSPIRE: Creating peer-to-peer connections through youth-led performances that make classical music accessible and relatable. CONNECT: Building pathways to quality, affordable music programs for families who have traditionally lacked access. Through strategic partnerships with the Washington Musical Pathways Initiative, the DC Youth Orchestra Program and other established community organizations, we're creating sustainable access points in neighborhoods where music education options are limited. The research is clear: music education physically transforms brain structure, enhances cognitive development, and significantly improves academic outcomes. Yet in many DC communities, particularly in Wards 7 and 8, families remain disconnected from these opportunities due to awareness gaps and perceived barriers. Our youth-led model resonates because families see themselves represented, making music education feel accessible, relevant, and achievable. We're not just talking about access—we're supporting it.
