About Potential Energy Group

Potential Energy Group is a spin out that resulted from a Transport Research Innovation Grant in 2023 (TRIG 2023). During TRIG 2023 we took a laboratory concept to TRL4 and produced devices that captured rail vibration and converted it into electrical power. We have assembled over £250k of test and development equipment in our South London laboratory. Since TRIG 2023 we have expanded our capability to use the vibration found in a railway track to a) generate electrical power for Internet of Things (IoT) rail side devise, and b) use the vibrations coupled with AI to determine the structural health of a rail. Our device, which is at TRL4, was placed top 10 (out of over 2,000) submissions to the Etihad Rail Innovation Challenge 2024. We are now seeking end users partners to complete in-situ tests to refine our device set-up and the AI used to monitor the system. We have developed a dashboard that registers a red-amber-green rating and can detect possible failures at levels below those currently available. This gives our system as USP in that low cost repairs are made possible reducing lost passenger hours and maintenance costs. Our system has a range of applications such as monitoring plant machinery and gearboxes.
