La Boutique de Livre et Plus Learning is easier when you aren’t fighting a language barrier, which accounts for the popularity of La Boutique du Livre et plus, a store devoted to the French culture and language. The French section of Winnipeg takes an enthusiastic interest in the store, which opened in St. Boniface in 1978. La Boutique specializes in books, educational games and toys. Leonie and Normand Boisvert were the founders in 1978, Bruno LeMadec bought it in 1994, and his brother Patrick, who was a school counselor for 25 years, took over the store when his brother died, operating it with his daughter, Jannie. Joanne Therrien has been the owner since 2009. La Boutique serves locally based schools and institutions with books and teaching aids and encourages school reading clubs with gift certificates distributed in collaboration with the Ministry of Educaiton. Books written in French are the number one focus, but you will also find French movies on DVD, French-language education toys and games, French music and French computer software, and a new gift boutique with Everything French, all of which are updated frequently. The Bookstore team provide some of the cultural glue in their community, striving to keep the French language and culture a vital part of Winnipeg and Western Canada. They encourage French families, French schools and Francophiles to take an interest in all things French at La Boutique du Livre et plus.
