Engineering in Canada is in a Crisis. We are advocating for establishing Professional Digital Engineering as a recognized and regulated discipline within the engineering profession in Canada, ensuring public safety and professional accountability in our increasingly digital world. While regulatory bodies exist across Canada, they have struggled to properly address the specialized knowledge, skills, and responsibilities that fundamentally differ from traditional physical engineering disciplines: civil, mechanical, chemical, electrical, and engineering physics. It has been over 40 years since the introduction of Software Engineering, and as a profession we continue to struggle to properly address the professional aspects of this discipline along with other digital domains. Engineering as a profession has an obligation to uphold the public welfare and this requires competent and trustworthy engineers who are not only licensed, but more importantly, professional. We have gone far too long without professional engineers in the digital disciplines holding us back from building a thriving and prosperous Canada. To build a solid engineering foundation for Canada's future, we need to: - Own this crisis as a profession - Modernize the engineering profession to provide a solid foundation for growth - Re-imagine what professional engineering looks like for digital disciplines - Establish the right to practice for AI Engineering and all digital engineering domains This is our moment to act, to speak up, and to fight for professional digital engineering in Canada.
