About Project MAARA
MAARA, founded by Dace and Robert in 2020, is an initiative dedicated to reshaping lifestyles and cultivating sustainability. Leaving the city life behind, we jumped into this adventure by buying 30 hectares of land with forests, waterfalls and grazelands, surrounded by the mountain stretches of the National Park of Três Picos, close to Nova Friburgo in Rio de Janeiro state. Our project has converted a conventional farm in a sustainable permaculture haven. Projects implemented include setting up all soft and hard infrastructure, building of an ecological sewage system, establishing an agroforest with focus on coffee, fruit, wood and nut production, partly with CO2 compensation. Additionally, we've undertaken bio-construction, created a natural pool, manage a volunteer community, and initiated an eco-pedagogic project with local schools to raise awareness about sustainable practices. MAARA is more than a cultivation initiative; it aspires to be a reference and permaculture playground for like-minded individuals. The goal is to foster collaborative learning, share experiences, produce sustainable food, and enhance land fertility, productivity, and biodiversity. Rooted in principles of harmony and respect for nature and the local community, MAARA seeks to catalyse positive change, aspiring to be a beacon of inspiration for those passionate about creating a sustainable future. We welcome volunteers from around the world, providing an opportunity to learn about permaculture, agroforest management, organic gardening, soil regeneration, composting, the importance of bees and other insects, as well as enjoying nutritious vegetarian meals and community living. Nestled in a comfortable farmhouse amid breath-taking mountainous scenery near Rio de Janeiro, it's the perfect setting to embark on a journey of discovery.
